The Islamic attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001 killed 2,996 people and injured over 6,000 others. Hijacked planes were flown into the North and South towers respectively. Within an hour and 42 minutes both towers had collapsed. The memorials to 9/11 are still very evocative. Pools mark the sites of the original Twin Tower buildings with the names inscribed of all those who lost their lives.
